Focused shockwave therapy (FSWT) is the application of high energy soundwaves to treat chronic musculoskeletal conditions and sports-related injuries. It is a form of mechanical stimulus that induces a cellular response.
Shockwave has been shown to increase blood flow, elicit an analgesic response (pain relief) and is thought to improve natural tissue repair. The focused shockwave energy is generated electromagnetically and is directed to a defined point where the beams converge deep into one focal area of tissue within the body.

Shockwave is believed to be a “rebooting” of the body’s stagnant repair system or simply re-starts the natural healing cascade of chemical responses. The pain relieving effect can allow you to rehabilitate your injury to ensure you make a full recovery and help prevent reoccurrence.
Shockwave can be an effective treatment for:
- Tendon injury, tendinopathy.
- Osteoarthritis of the knee and ankle.
- Medial tibial stress syndrome (Shin Splints).
- GTPS: Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (lateral hip pain).
- Lateral epicondylagia (Tennis Elbow).
- Rotator cuff tendinopathy and chronic shoulder conditions including calcific tendinopathy.
- Chronic joint stiffness and pain.
For more specific information regarding treatment or to discuss whether shockwave is suitable for you please contact the clinic to make an appointment with Cate Boyd or Fiona Williams our shockwave therapists, to discuss this as a treatment option. Please note this cannot be booked online.
